Tea Bar Blues ; Your Say...

Summary

On May 25, there was a report in The Herald about the closure of three out of the four WRVS tea bars in Derriford Hospital. Since then, two or three of your readers have commented about this article. In particular, the letter from Cynthia Wharton, printed in The Herald of June 7, states: "It is sad about the WRVS finishing at Derriford Hospital after many years." I wish to point out that the tea bar in the outpatients department is still being manned by WRVS volunteers, so the WRVS still has a presence in the hospital!

Since my retirement from working for the NHS in 2005, I worked as a WRVS tea bar lady over the intervening five years, and really enjoyed putting the world to rights when chatting (which I am very good at!) to fellow volunteers and, of course, my previous colleagues. However, as I was only doing one shift a fortnight by the time the A&E tea bar closed at the end of May, I decided to do something else instead, like philatelic sorter and sales lady for Oxfam in Tavistock.
