Summary
Many people in Plymouth are convinced that crime is spiralling, that our streets are being surrendered to yobs and that burglaries and criminal damage are rocketing. The perception among some is that our police are ineffectual and that they are powerless to stem the rising tide of offences.
But the reality, as we report today, is very different: because as the latest statistics show - and contrary to the often-espoused views of those who would have us believe that law and order is breaking down - police in Plymouth have scored some spectacular successes over the last 12 months. Overall crime has fallen in our city in the last year, continuing the downward trend recorded over the last six years. In the 12 months to March 29, there were 7.3 per cent fewer crimes recorded here. More specifically, thefts, robberies and burglaries are down by 19 per cent; vehicle crime has dropped by 27 per cent; domestic burglaries are down by three per cent; and violent crime is down by four cent, all of which indicates that police in Plymouth are making some serious inroads into the criminal fraternity and their activities, for which they deserve the highest praise. Some readers may point to three high-profile cases which we report on today to underpin their argument that crime is soaring. Certainly the pelting with rocks of firefighters by yobs in Devonport, the teen girl gang who threatened to slash the faces of their young victims and the fleeing bike rider who left his tag at the scene of a crash are horrifying, but in two of these cases the perpetrators were brought before courts and dealt with, for which the police should be commended. There is much good work going on which needs to be acknowledged by all - particularly those concerned about our city's future - but, nevertheless, our police still face a stiff challenge and there is much work yet to be done.See the full content of this document
