Summary

I confess to being nonplussed by what I assume was meant to be sarcastic criticism (January 14) of my letter defending David Oddie, who was in two minds about accepting an MBE.

Rather than guessing at the point my anonymous critic was attempting to make and perhaps responding incorrectly, I shall just cite a few examples from the original web 'debate', if one can dignify it with such a name, to back up my dismissal of his attackers as morons and crypto-fascists with a bunker mentality. One armchair philosopher dismissed Mr Oddie's misgivings because in his photo he was wearing a pink shirt. Another said he 'wasn't fit to lick the boots' of (here it comes again) our wonderful armed forces. Some fondly recalled their involvement in colonial wars. Another called Mr Oddie a traitor for thinking of refusing an honour - which, had he done so (as he should) would have put him in the company of such noted betrayers of their birthright as Alan Bennett, Rudyard Kipling, L S Lowry, Alastair Sim, Stephen Hawking, Francis Bacon, J G Ballard, Evelyn Waugh, Dawn French, Robert Graves, Nigella Lawson and Robert Morley, to name a few: and one charming soul warmly commended the Khmer Rouge for murdering all teachers, of which Mr Oddie is one.
