Summary
George orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four painted a scary picture of how he foresaw the world in a not too distant future.
He centred his tale on a doomed love affair - but when it was published in 1948, 1984 did seem such a long way away that its vision of totalitarianism in a society where there is no privacy, and where unorthodox ideas merit the death penalty, could be dismissed as a nightmare. Subsequent global events and repressive practices in some countries have made us think again, and many would argue justifiably that here we have lost too many of our freedoms and controls. The Theatre Royal's People's Company has re-examined Orwell's ideas in the light on contemporary society, and sought to picture the world in 2084. How much more of the novelist's imaginings will have become realities a century after he visualised them?See the full content of this document
