OLIVER COLVILE has been misled if he thinks there was ever an intention to berth, let alone base-port, the proposed Queen Elizabeth class carriers in Devonport. (May 15) Because of restricted access, the port is not suitable, and for sound military reasons, Devonport was never seriously considered (log on to http:// navy-matters.beedall.com/ cvf121.htm).
This is not important, as they will never be built anyway. Anybody with a grain of naval knowledge knows that a carrier does not deploy independently, but is escorted by a myriad of other vessels; a US carrier group typically consists of over eight warships, surface and subsurface, not including auxiliaries. As the RN only has 25 escort frigate/destroyers in total, (http:// www.royalnavy.mod.uk/) this would mean that two-thirds of the surface strength of the Royal Navy would have to be fully operational to sail two carrier groups.See the full content of this document
