A YOUNG city Royal Marine shot dead in Afghanistan during a "manic" firefight with Taliban forces has been described as a "hero" by a coroner.

Lance Corporal Ben Whatley, of Bickleigh's 42 Commando, died after being shot in the neck while defending a bridge in Helmand Province on Christmas Eve last year.
