RECENT headlines explaining that people in Britain are starving are disturbing, to say the least. The fuller story is that a proportion of people have to use the services of food banks across the nation because of the way the recession is shrinking the budgets of ordinary people and families, who have to turn to others for charitable assistance.
We are so encouraged to see the growth, expertise and importance of the Plymouth Food Bank, and to know it is making a practical difference here in our beloved city. So let's take a moment to think about daily needs: Bread is part of our staple diet worldwide - how often have we seen refugees being handed portions of bread in order to sustain their fragile lives. And it was bread, along with wine, that the Lord Jesus took, and broke, and handed out to His friends saying, "Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you" - words familiar to all who take Communion in churches.
