Summary
Mary o'leary's article 'It could be you... (but probably isn't)' in Thursday's Herald made amusing points regarding relative wealth, but for me raised further questions.
The article eventually raised the issue of poverty - real poverty, i.e. lack of housing. But what to do about it? Millions upon millions raised by Government are distributed to the 'deserving' through the Lottery Commission. Time and time again we see news in the Herald that a project is under threat of closure due to funding (in the form of grants) ending. There is very little security for these really valuable projects as grants, by their nature, are time-limited. So who is answerable for these decisions that affect our local communities? Certainly not locally elected politicians. The days of having local politicians making decisions and we, the electorate, therefore being able to hold said politicians to account for withdrawing or ending funding are sadly long gone. What we end up with are politicians who are very adept at getting photos in papers and being quoted for soundbites. There is, sadly, very little debate these days about important local issues, i.e. where do we, the electorate, want our taxes spent?See the full content of this document
