IWAS nowhere near old enough to hold a driving licence when the Mini was launched in August 1959 - but as a 1950s schoolboy fascinated by cars and their workings, I was knowledgeable enough to recognise the Mini as something special. On launch day I hopped on a bus after school - as you could then, when worries about child safety had still to surface - and bought a "penny one" for the three- mile journey into Leeds, alighting outside Central Garage, the main Austin dealer.

Given the innovation involved in the car I'd expected a crowd, but the showroom was deserted. Even the dealer seemed half-hearted about BMC's new baby - the sole Speedwell blue Mini sat innocuously in the showroom, with pride of place - on a rotating turntable - given to an Austin A95 Six.
