Judge Them Now ; Your Say...

Summary

PAMELA BIELAWSKI (Your Say, Monday) says that, as a devout Catholic she is appalled at the horrendous clerical child abuse, then adds that the abusers must be left to God's judgement when life ends.

No matter which faith abusers practise, I would rather they faced judgement in the judicial system in this life. These are heinous criminal acts against children by people in positions of trust. Pamela suggests that child abuse is more prevalent in schools, youth and sports centres, child minders and families. To my mind, how prevalent it may or may not be in another organisation does not excuse the crime wherever it is committed. If a school or youth centre was aware of an abuser on its staff and rather than inform the authorities chose to relocate the abuser in the same or similar role, or to cover up the crime, then it would be regarded as an accessory after the fact and culpable. Pamela also suggests that all child abuse should be rigorously weeded out in the world. I agree, and to that end I believe all records of any organisation, including religious ones, which have contact with children should be open to official scrutiny. To refuse to offer up such records for examination would suggest to me that the organisation concerned has something to hide.
