It Was a Privilege to Work for Her

Summary

Regarding your article on Pentillie Castle (August 20), I have a very different memory of the late Mrs Jeffery Coryton.

I worked for her from 1986 to 2007, when I retired due to ill health. She was a very active lady and had many, many visitors over the years to the castle; she had friends visit regulary from America, France, Wales and from all over England. I would valet their cars and fill them with petrol for their return journey, all at Mrs Coryton's expense; if they came by train, one of my tasks was to fetch and return them to the station. She would holiday regularly in France and London, so was not such a recluse.Yes, she was a very private person, but if you were invited to Pentillie she went out of her way to make you very welcome. Pentillie was her home and like most people she didn't take kindly to strangers appearing at the front door or trying to picnic on the front lawn (who would?) especially seeing there was a 'Private' sign at the main gate.
