Summary

The tragic tale of Shannon Matthews is the latest in a long series of cases in the press which have led to numerous commentators lamenting the poor parenting standards of today. We talk of a generation of illiterate, disrespectful and uneducated youths, devoid of guidance and self-respect. This has depressed me deeply.

This morning, however, I sat in Stirling Road Surgery and in walked a young mother with her small son who had injured a finger. She politely asked if it would be possible to see a nurse and then sat in the waiting area with her child. What a delight to behold! The mother engaged her little boy in his surroundings, reassured him when his finger hurt and made education out of the smallest of things (he showed an interest in a motorbike outside: cue "What colour is the bike? How many wheels does it have?" etcetera). The little boy, surely in some pain, displayed impeccable manners, and had the type of worshipping bond with his mother that we rarely witness these days. If only this were the rule and not the exception. I do not know the young mum's name (to the boy, she was 'Mummy') but noted that the little boy was called Samuel (he was about three, but recognised his own name when it was displayed).
