FIRST the bad news; the second pandemic wave of swine flu is officially under way and people in Plymouth should not expect to escape its effects. But now the good; the first batches of the vaccine have already arrived here and are being made available to those most at risk and to front-line healthcare staff who can expect to be dealing with sufferers.
After the initial publicity about swine flu and its effects earlier this year, some optimists may have fondly imagined that the threat had abated and that warnings of the potentially fatal flu strain were the result of media hype. Sadly, that is not the case. The experts who have been monitoring the spread of swine flu always predicted that it would retreat during the summer months, only to come back with a vengeance in the autumn. This is precisely what is happening. Nationally, 93 people are known to have died from the effects of swine flu; mercifully, none of them was in Plymouth, but the medical authorities here are rightly prepared for the city being hit during the coming months, and are already embarking on a vaccination programme for the groups who most need protection.See the full content of this document
