MARK CARLYON writes with a tale that is quite common among football fans that have items of memorabilia. Items to treasure that have been passed down.
One of the programmes in Mark's collection is an Argyle item from Wednesday, January 26 1955 when, in a floodlit fixture, the Pilgrims met Linzer Athletic Sportsklub from the upper-Austrian state capital of Linz, who were touring the country. The visiting players were all amateurs, and the pen pictures described not only their football credentials, but also their occupations. Mark says what Argyle would not do for a modern Alfred Machen. A 23-year-old tailor, the description of inside-forward Machen as a player is wonderful: "A real ball player, quick and clever, capable of giving that slick pass that opens a defence."See the full content of this document
