Summary


Alceste is the misanthrope who hates mankind because of its hypocrisy and sycophancy.

Moliere's 1666 play satirised aristocrats and pseudo intellectuals. Martin Crimp's modernisation updates the duplicity and pretentiousness to today's brittle Ab Fab world of celebrity and its hangers-on, and peoples it with stars and their agents, critics, and scandal-mongering journalists who defend publication of privileged information as being 'in the public interest'.
