Flawed Policy

Summary

I believe Gilbert Stevens' comments (February 14) about the need for a centralised Mass Burn Incinerator must be challenged.

It will be catastrophic if we as a society do not challenge attitudes toward waste. It is simply unacceptable that we continue to waste resources. If we burn it we cannot reuse it, it will pollute and financial agreements that authorities enter into to build the incinerator will inevitably mean that mass burn activity has to be fed to pay the mortgage. That in turn will discourage authorities from investing in recycling and reuse. This money would be better spent encouraging and equipping the population to recycle and reuse. National government intervention is needed to tackle the issues of wasteful packaging.
