REFERENCE The Herald's reports last week on Plymouth's 'drink until you drop culture', 735 criminal offences connected to the so- called evening and night-time economy in five areas of the city during a 22-week period, coupled with 799 people admitted to Derriford Hospital with alcohol-related illnesses during an 11- month period, must be regarded as cause for serious concern.

I want to applaud The Herald for keeping Plymouth's massive booze problem at the forefront. The direct cause of alcohol-related criminal offending and illness is alcohol. It is of little or no use to apply the term 'excessive drinking' if one does not understand the nature of addiction.
