Drip, Drip of Poverty

Summary

Like many householders in Plymouth, I struggle to pay water rates. I'm a single parent with three children and have to find a staggering pounds92 a month for South West Water (and no, I do not live in a manor house on the banks of the Tamar, just a crumbling three-bed flat in the city centre). This is with the assessed reduction, for which you must have a minimum of three children to qualify.

So far this year, I had to go without a fridge for a month, and one of my children has gone without a bedstead for several months. South West Water payment enforcement is vigorous, to say the least. Due to these problems I contacted South West Water to have a meter fitted so that I could benefit from their much-touted Watercare scheme. By my reckoning this would reduce the bill to a managable pounds40 a month. To my absolute shock, my place was assessed as unsuitable for a meter; to provide a meter would involve South West Water in 'unreasonable costs' , apparently!
