Council 'Ignoring' Pavement Hazards ; Your Say...

Summary

IN REPLY to Mr Jim Chant's statement on the lack of maintenance of pavements in Waterloo Street, Stoke, I agree these are hazardous to walk on, with broken and uneven slate paving stones.

Unfortunately there are also many similar pavements which seem to be ignored by the council. I have tried for eight years, when both the Labour and Conservative councils have been in power, to complain about a pavement outside Devonport Park, just above the Lower Park Lodge. I tried once again when the West End of the city centre was being developed, and the fine pavements were being torn up and the good paving stones removed. I thought the discarded paving stones would have been ideal to replace dangerous old ones outside Devonport Park. Speaking to a spokesman for Amey, the official contractors to the council, who have a 10-year contract to repair Plymouth highways, he told me: "We don't intend to lift paving stones to repair the pavements. We might repair one or two stones, yet if a pavement looks rough but people can walk on it safely we won't touch it."
