Creature Comfort ; Your Say...

Summary

I WRITE in response to the letter from R. Hancox ("Animal Power", January 5) about his/her 'whining' cat and dog. I would suggest a visit to the vet may be in order to ascertain that they are allright.

I have had six dogs and 13 cats, all but three were 'throw outs from other people' over the past thirty years and I have NEVER had one that whined or meowed all the time. It is generally viewed as a sign of distress. As to R. Hancox's comment that 'animals cause nothing but friction', yes, you are right, they have obviously been responsible for all the wars, bloodshed and destruction on planet earth, nothing to do with nasty minded human beings. Why didn't I think of that before, maybe because I consider myself truly fortunate to have had the loving companionship of all these wonderful creatures. They were never mollycoddled, we had a smallholding so we had a lot of other animals/birds but I have never regretted knowing even one of them, more than I can say about some humans. One of my cats saved the lives of two of my children when smoke from a partially extinguished heater filled their bedrooms, the little cat patted my daughters cheek until she woke. I realise some people are born lacking the animal and/or children compassion gene, well that's my theory, but if you really try to get to know either of them it is so rewarding and you might even be a happier person. No one forces you to have either and if R. Hancox is in this difficult position and can't or won't watch and learn I would think the best thing is for the animal lover in this relationship to move on.
