Classics in Line-Up for Historic Vehicle Rally

Summary

A DISPLAY commemorating 100 years of Morgan sports cars will be one of the many attractions on offer at the Historic Vehicle Gathering taking place in Devon this weekend, writes David Morgan.

Held in the scenic parkland of Powderham Castle at Kenton, near Exeter, tomorrow and on Sunday, the 36th annual event will host a special display area comprising approximately 50 classic and modern Morgan sports cars. From the moment H F S Morgan built his first three-wheeler, with a shaft-driven single rear wheel and independent front suspension, all Morgans have been hand-built in Malvern combining traditional skills with some of the latest engineering under the bonnet. Compared to other British marques, Morgan remains unique in that it continues to be owned by the Morgan family and is now managed by the founder's grandson, Charles. Steam has been a popular theme of this rally in recent years and the organisers, the Crash Box and Classic Car Club of Devon, are expecting to see over 25 full-size steamers and in the region of 20 smaller gauge steamers. Classic car entries continue to dominate the show, with over 1,000 cars booked in on the stands belonging to 76 vehicle clubs representing much loved marques such as Austin Healey, Ford, Hillman, Jaguar, MG, Rover, Triumph and Rolls Royce. A new entry this year is the Vintage and Japanese Motorcycle Club. This, together with the 500 cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles booked in as individual entries, will create one of the most diverse displays of motoring history in the Westcountry.
