Summary
I AGREE with the letter from Chris Deacon (July 19) regarding the Hunting Act. During the General Election campaign, I attended a public meeting where candidates answered questions on a variety of topics. I asked the panel their views on hunting. South West Devon MP Gary Streeter said he would vote to repeal the act. His reasoning was that this law did not work, and should therefore be scrapped. Are we then to assume that laws in this country, for example murder, theft etc, when broken, should be abolished? I hope not. It is sad that MPs representing rural constituencies see votes from the pro- hunting brigade as their priority and will vote accordingly.
The Liberal Democrat candidate on the panel that night expressed her horror at the prospect of hunting being reintroduced, and assured all present that this was the view of her party. How will Liberal Democrat MPs vote now that they are in this coalition government? Is the coalition a listening government? If there is a problem with foxes and other wild animals, it can be humanely and legally controlled.See the full content of this document
