THE media circus that so vividly drew attention to the plight of Haitians immediately after the devastating earthquake in January has moved on. In and around the capital Port-au-Prince there are 20 sites where homeless people have found shelter under tents and tarpaulins and have been provided with latrines and water. But dozens of other sites lack even the most elementary aid.
Increasingly patients are turning up at Mdecins Sans Frontires hospitals with ailments directly related to their appalling living conditions. Such a situation cannot be tolerated, so the charity is currently distributing 26,000 more tents, to shelter about 100,000 people, as well as cooking utensils, soap, towels, blankets and mosquito nets.
