THOUSANDS of people in the West Country died last year because of smoking-related diseases, despite the area having the nation's lowest smoking rates.

According to the 2011 Local Authority Health Profiles for England, only 18 per cent of the local population are smokers but last year 8,453 people died from smokingrelated problems.
