Highlighting Importance of Local Food

TRANSITION Tavistock (TT) hosted a meeting where local producers and smallholders were encouraged to take along their own produce. The importance of local food production and its links to efficient energy use is attracting attention, particularly as the cost of energy and transport continues to increase.

Barbara Witnessed the Launch of Aircraft Carrier

FOLLOWING on from our two recent stories about HMS Terrible (aka Sydney), I've had a delightful visit from Barbara Harrison. The reason? Barbara's dad, Reg Pengelly, was the inspector of shipwrights working on the construction of said ship.

Then and Now ; Terries Garage

REMARKABLY some of the road markings are still as they were - the zebra crossing looks much the same as it did 50 years ago, although the Belisha beacon has grown a little. However there are, inevitably, more markings than there were - the zigzag lines, the directional signs and so on.

The Place ; Beaumont Road

TWO hundred years ago there were a number of substantial detached dwellings just outside the main built-up area of Plymouth, one of them a very new property destined to become known as Beaumont House (the name, like Prospect, Bellevue and Mount Pleasant implies a fine outlook from an elevated position). The house was built at the very end of the 18th century and was later bought, and, in all probability named, by Thomas Bewes.

The Pub ; Ferryboat Inn

FOR hundreds of years there were ferries crossing the Plym at various points. Indeed the recent revival of the link between Mount Batten and the Barbican shows there is still adequate demand for such a service.

Ill-Fated R101 Airship Flew Over Our Heads

THE item on Greycoat School got Sid Chapple interested. "The school was situated between lower Gibbon Street and Hampton Street, between Regent Street and Ebrington Street," he says.

Picture Puzzle

THANKS to Ian Criddle at the Local Studies Library for this one. Ian writes: "A gentleman (Mr McGregar) called into the library and showed me the attached photograph. It had been used as a bookmark in a book that he purchased recently from the St Luke''s Hospice charity shop at Transit Way, Crownhill.

This Week When?

A NEW ambulance station was planned for Plymouth to serve both Freedom Fields and the new Derriford hospitals, The Herald reported following a meeting of Plymouth and District Community Council. "The site chosen was at the back of the Tecalimit Factory at Marsh Mills roundabout," readers were told. "This location is equidistant between the two hospitals, which should ensure a quick and efficient emergency service to both the city centre and Roborough."

Fletcher Delighted by Young's Progress

MANAGER Carl Fletcher has praised the progress being made by Plymouth Argyle's teenage midfielder Luke Young. While the Pilgrims' recent results have varied considerably, Young - who will be 19 on February 22 - has really come to the fore.

Argyle Ladies to Play Tottenham at Home Park

NEW owner James Brent has given the go-ahead for Plymouth Argyle Ladies to play Tottenham Hotspur at Home Park. The high-profile match is scheduled for February 19 and was confirmed following a request to Brent by coach Dave Burns and the Plymouth Argyle Fans' Trust. Trust chairman Warren Bowden said the game could be vital for Argyle if they need to win to stave off relegation from the Premier League.
