SCI-FI fans felt the force when Storm Troopers and Jedi Knights invaded the city . The annual Plymouth Sci-Fi Day took place on Cornwall Street yesterday as part of the Christmas West End Carnival. It included robots, people dressed up as their favourite characters from Star Wars and Doctor Who - and actor David Church, who played a Storm Trooper in The Empire Strikes Back and a rebel pilot in Return of the Jedi.

Man Admits a String of Child Sex Offences

A 65-YEAR-OLD man has admitted a string of sexual offences against children. Barry Davis, pictured far right, of Saltash Road in Keyham, appeared at Plymouth Magistrates' Court charged with six counts of sexually touching girls younger than 13. The court heard that he was cautioned for a similar offence in 2009, and he describes it as a "compulsion that he cannot stop".

Gas Leak Sparks Emergency in the City Centre

A MAJOR gas leak sparked an emergency operation which saw part of Plymouth city centre evacuated. Engineers called in police and firefighters to help seal off and clear an area round Millbay Road due to a fractured mains gas pipe.

Red Diesel Rules Are Waived

FARMERS are being allowed to use red diesel in their tractors to help grit and clear snow from public roads. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has waived the rules because of the extremely cold weather conditions.

EMPLOYERS in the South West have reported the strongest hiring intentions in the country for the second consecutive quarter. The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, is based on responses from 2,100 UK employers and shows that South West employers intend to increase staffing levels during the first three months of 2011 with a Seasonally Adjusted Net Employment Outlook of +13 per cent reported.

A HEROIN addict broke into a house amid a string of crimes to feed his habit, a court heard. Tony Stewart, aged 25, is to face sentence at Crown Court after he admitted breaking into a boarded-up home.

Festive Fair at Mount Edgcumbe

FESTIVE food and gifts will be on offer at a Christmas fair next weekend. Mount Edgcumbe House will play host to the event which will include choral singers, culinary displays by some of the region's top chefs and more than 50 stalls offering a selection of locally produced food, craftwork and gifts.
