Plymouth Evening Herald, The
Get Intimate with Rhythm King Mike
Music Writer HE MAY not exactly be a household name, but Mike Sanchez can cut the mustard with the very best rhythm'n'blues, rock'n'roll performers and has a reputation as one of the most exciting live artists in his genre.
Music Writer ADRIAN Edmondson may have had a variety of career changes in his working life, but his motivation for each has always been exactly the same - to have fun!
Dogs Star Tyla Enjoys Net Gain
Music Writer LAST seen in the city performing with his band Dogs D'Amour at the Cooperage, back in 1992, songwriter/poet/ artist/frontman Tyla returns to play the Hippo tomorrow night as a solo artist.
I would like to express my hearfelt thanks to the angel who found my purse when I dropped it at the crossing on the junction of Wolseley Road and Beacon Park Road. The stress they saved me cannot be imagined. I don't have to chase round replacing cards and informing people of their loss. I would also like to thank the police who returned my purse to my house that same evening.
The Centre for Cities report, published on June 24, warned that youth unemployment is set to treble by 2011. Plymouth had one of the highest increases in the percentage of young people claiming Jobseekers Allowance. Charities like The Prince's Trust need support now, more than ever, to help young people find jobs. In the past year, calls from young people to our local offices have increased more than 50 per cent and we want to be able to support those people in need.
I would like to comment on the Your Say letter about some people not using their allocated parking spaces in Canterbury Drive and Honiton Walk. I have also noticed that a few people do not use their own spaces, as they are apparently too lazy to go an extra couple of metres. They turn in to the road and park in a communal side road. It makes it so difficult to find a space for people that do not have their own parking bay.
Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for more than 100 million years, but the third instalment of the computer-animated Ice Age series will struggle to reign at the UK box office for more than two weeks. The colourful follow-up to Ice Age 2: The Meltdown plunders from Jules Verne's A Journey To The Centre Of The Earth as the cuddly critters discover an entire ecosystem beneath the ice.
Perfectionist director Michael Mann doffs his fedora to Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger in this beautifully- crafted biopic. Public Enemies surveys a volatile period in America's history when a group of hoodlums ran rings around J Edgar Hoover and his fledgling Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Regarding Mrs Brisbane's recent letter headlined Mums Menace - how ridiculous. How can she tar all mothers with the same brush? As for banning pushchairs from public transport, all stores, supermarkets and crowded roads at the weekend... what? When are we supposed to buy nappies, baby food and other essentials like clothes and shoes? Under the cover of darkness when our babies should be in bed asleep? When am I supposed to visit family and how do I get there? A taxi is out of the question, a...
Albenaza On the Road to Success
Music Writer LOCAL acoustic/rock trio Albenaza will be back together to play a rare city show at Ride Marquee on July 9, after the return of Ben Hall from bass-playing duties with Neil Halstead and his band.
I was expecting the Saturdays to be something of a poor imitation of Girls Aloud, but right from the start of their all-singing, all- dancing show at Plymouth Pavilions, I was proved wrong. Here are five gorgeous, pouty, sassy girls who not only look fab they sound it too - especially when in full-flowing, five-part harmony mode. However individually they can really sing - some perhaps better than others - as they demonstrated on many occasions when taking turns on lead vocals.
It was the night the music didn't die. London Calling resuscitated the tunes of The Clash's late great Joe Strummer and even found time to raise a glass to the freshly departed Michael Jackson. Now that's what I call a tribute act. And they did it with a sound and fury not witnessed since Joe was partnering Mick, Paul and Topper in the glory days of the only band that mattered.
Rewarding Memories of Drake's Island Life
Like Ken Headon, I too have fond memories of Drake's Island, having worked there in the mid-1970s as the chef of the Adventure Centre, where my responsibility included feeding students with a breakfast, packed lunch and a cooked evening meal all for pounds1 per person. There was permanently soup on the stove for children who fell into the sea while sailing. They would be brought into my kitchen, blanketed, to sit beside the stove with a bowl of hot soup to stave off hypothermia.
It's a Fond Goodbye After a Stunning Year
This is my last 'His Say' as President of the Students' Union, and what a fantastic year it's been! It really is quite daunting to think how quickly 12 months go by, but it's been great fun and I've learnt an awful lot, forming a great springboard for my future career.
Having read letters calling for more openness on the matter of councillors' expenses, I am quite happy to declare that in the three years since I was elected as a representative of the Stoke Ward I have never submitted a claim for any expenses. My P60 shows that I paid a total of pounds2,550.60 tax during the year 2008-09.
