In fact new car sales in the UK were down again in May - 24.8 per cent, to be exact, and 27.9 per cent for the first five months of this year - and remember those figures are a comparison with the same months last year, which in turn were significantly down on those in 2007. The pounds2,000-per-new-car scrappage scheme launched by the Government has attracted around 35,000 orders, encouraging but these additional sales will not show up until the June sales figures are produced.

Many of us by now will have read Councillor Pengelly's letter (Your Say, June 20) giving her point of view regarding the possible sale of Plymouth Citybus. Few of us, I suspect, will have been reassured by the points she has made. Let us first take the positives. Citybus is a 'significant council asset'. Smeaton's Tower formed the magnificent backdrop to a performance by contemporary dance company TaskForce. Visual artist Ella Huhne worked with the group to create a performance in and around Smeaton's Tower to mark the lighthouse's 250th anniversary year.
Children have left a message for posterity in a time capsule buried at the site of a new supermarket. Pupils from Torpoint Infant School and Torpoint Band Hut Playgroup were invited to fill the capsule by Sainsbury's and contractor ISG Pearce, who carried out the work to convert a former Somerfield store.

A trading stall with a difference has opened in Plymouth city centre. Worthwhile Ethical Trading hopes it will soon make enough profit to move from a seven-days-a-week stall in Old Town Street into a rented shop.
Hooe has been treated to its seventh village fun day, which enjoyed spectacular weather. The Oasis fun day is organised by the Reverend Stu Clarke and paid for by Hooe Baptist church, and attracted up to 300 people last weekend on Hooe's village green.
